Wavelet-based medical image fusion via a non-linear operator

    Get PDF
Medical image fusion has been extensively used to aid medical diagnosis by combining images of various modalities such as Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Image (MRI) into a single output image that contains salient features from both inputs. This paper proposes a novel fusion algorithm through the use of a non-linear fusion operator, based on the low sub-band coefficients of the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Rather than employing the conventional mean rule for approximation sub-bands, a modified approach is taken by the introduction of a non-linear fusion rule that exploits the multimodal nature of the image inputs by prioritizing the stronger coefficients. Performance evaluation of CT-MRI image fusion datasets based on a range of wavelet filter banks shows that the algorithm boasts improved scores of up to 92% as compared to established methods. Overall, the non-linear fusion rule holds strong potential to help improve image fusion applications in medicine and indeed other fields

REST: Robust and Efficient Neural Networks for Sleep Monitoring in the Wild

In recent years, significant attention has been devoted towards integrating deep learning technologies in the healthcare domain. However, to safely and practically deploy deep learning models for home health monitoring, two significant challenges must be addressed: the models should be (1) robust against noise; and (2) compact and energy-efficient. We propose REST, a new method that simultaneously tackles both issues via 1) adversarial training and controlling the Lipschitz constant of the neural network through spectral regularization while 2) enabling neural network compression through sparsity regularization. We demonstrate that REST produces highly-robust and efficient models that substantially outperform the original full-sized models in the presence of noise. For the sleep staging task over single-channel electroencephalogram (EEG), the REST model achieves a macro-F1 score of 0.67 vs. 0.39 achieved by a state-of-the-art model in the presence of Gaussian noise while obtaining 19x parameter reduction and 15x MFLOPS reduction on two large, real-world EEG datasets. By deploying these models to an Android application on a smartphone, we quantitatively observe that REST allows models to achieve up to 17x energy reduction and 9x faster inference. Differential Evolution and Deterministic Chaotic Series: A Detailed Study

    Get PDF
This research represents a detailed insight into the modern and popular hybridization of deterministic chaotic dynamics and evolutionary computation. It is aimed at the influence of chaotic sequences on the performance of four selected Differential Evolution (DE) variants. The variants of interest were: original DE/Rand/1/ and DE/Best/1/ mutation schemes, simple parameter adaptive jDE, and the recent state of the art version SHADE. Experiments are focused on the extensive investigation of the different randomization schemes for the selection of individuals in DE algorithm driven by the nine different two-dimensional discrete deterministic chaotic systems, as the chaotic pseudorandom number generators. The performances of DE variants and their chaotic/non-chaotic versions are recorded in the one-dimensional settings of 10D and 15 test functions from the CEC 2015 benchmark, further statistically analyzed
